Building a Chain of Success

“You are what you repeatedly do.”

                                                                                   – Aristotle

If you are reading this, I will assume you are interested in making health and fitness a part of your life. Perhaps you made a New Year’s resolution to be more active, or to lose weight. Maybe you want to have more energy for your kids, live longer, or feel better on a day-to-day basis. So you came to CrossFit Dark Horse and signed up. You put your money where your mouth was, ready to dig into the new, shiny fitness toy, in the hopes that it would make you stick to your goal.

Cut to a few weeks later, when you once again find yourself falling off the fitness wagon. You missed class on Monday, and suddenly it’s Friday and you haven’t made it back to the gym. A working lunch over McNuggets turns into three straight days’ worth of McMisery.  I feel you. We’ve all been there. Why is it so darned difficult to stick to health and fitness goals?

I think it has to do with how we frame those goals to begin with. Here are a few thoughts on how to stay on track:

1.  Commit

You have to make your health and fitness goals a priority. Resolving to do something is a very vague notion. What you are doing instead is building a new habit, and new habits require commitment. Find a class time that works for you and put it in your calendar. Consider it a high-priority meeting and do everything in your power to protect it. Then, commit to being there, rain or shine, whether you’re “feeling it” or not. Just go, be there, and do the work.  No one has ever dragged themselves to the gym despite not feeling it, and then left feeling worse; you’re always glad you made it in.

2.  You’re human

Realize that sometimes you will slip up. When that happens, stop beating yourself up! We all make mistakes. We crave donuts and stay up late sometimes. The key is to get right back on track. Don’t let one missed workout turn into a week’s worth. Success breeds success. Build a chain of success and don’t break it. The longer the chain gets, the better you feel, and the easier it becomes to live your commitment.

3.  Get help and support!

The Dark Horse community is amazing and would do anything they could to help you succeed. Find an accountability buddy who will call you out when you need it. Place a friendly wager that keeps you both committed.  Sign up for Territory Foods if cooking healthy isn’t your thing. Or if you’re looking for something more personalized, you can try our individual nutrition coaching programs. If it’s too easy for you to back out on yourself, rely on your community and your coaches to help you keep your commitment.

You know the old saying. Your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your character, and your character becomes your destiny.

Making your health and fitness a priority is one of the best returns on investment I can imagine. And by living your commitment – day in, day out – you prove to yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to. The sky’s the limit!
